If you use blogger then you probably also got the email about the Blogger and Amazon.com integration. The bait is that if you use this feature (which claims to not only simplify how you hyperlink to Amazon, but allows you to directly search the website from Blogger editor) then you will earn "commissions" from the Amazon-linked items you've recommended and your readers have bought.

All this is well and good and I've got nothing against earning a couple of extra bucks or Amazon (trust me, I've bought plenty from them!). However, I hate the manipulation of this "integration," how the recommendation of a book and the use of a hyperlink to that book becomes a marketing ploy to trusting readers. Aside from that - it also seems like another way for a huge business/website to not only take more business away from other, smaller, bookstores, but also attention from authors' pages, book reviews, etc.

Anyway, before I step off my soap box - I'd like to make a commitment to hyperlinking any books Hiving Out recommends to IndieBound, an online place that helps locate local independent and small bookstores (hope that's okay with you, L. and Mae!). And, yes, with this website you can also earn commissions too (something we have not signed up to do), but at least it's in support of the independent bookstores and who doesn't want to support them, right? Reason to love rain (#4)

Ah, the classic trench and the obligatory blog homage to it. But the trench is much deserving - it is so practical and yet so perfect. Even my boyfriend thinks it's cute, but I acknowledge that that may be because he has a thing for WASPy blondes from the early eighties - Teri Garr worn one in "Mr Mom," Meryl Streep in "Kramer vs. Kramer," and Allie from the sitcom "Kate and Allie" rocked one too (the series is free on netflix and I've inflicted it upon him more than once. I know, I'm a horrible gf).

I, however, finally bought a trench coat last year and loved every rainy day in it even though I think I looked more like Colombo than anyone else. Nevertheless, I'm still looking forward for the rain to bring coolness instead of humidity so I can drag out my trench and have people ask me whether I've solved any crimes recently. I like the idea of it that much.

And, of course, no one looks as lovely in the classic trench as Catherine Deneuve (just spend an afternoon with "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"), but who knew that she could also sell it with such sex appeal (clip from "La chamade").

Deer Audrey

I recently found out that Audrey Hepburn had a pet fawn. Can you believe it? How stinkin' adorable is that? His name was Pippin, nicknamed Ip. According to a "New York Daily News" article by Patrick Huguenin, "Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn is still full of surprises:"


When Hepburn was making her 1959 flick "Green Mansions," directed by then-husband Mel Ferrer, the animal trainer on the set suggested that she take her on-screen sidekick, a baby deer, home with her so that he would learn to follow her.

"It was truly amazing to see Audrey with that fawn," remembers [Bob] Willoughby [photographer] in the caption alongside a photo of Pippin cuddling up to Hepburn like a lap dog as she naps on the couch. (Her pet dog, Mr. Famous, is curled in a ball at the other end of the sofa.)


"While Audrey's maid had been told about the little deer, she could not believe her eyes seeing Ip sleeping with Audrey so calmly," writes Willoughby. "She was shaking her head and just kept smiling."
