a wooden spool

Pink and white Baker's Twine x 20 yards on vintage wooden spool via papermoonbyKAT

Packages just look that much better when the wrapping is finished off with a twine bow or tie. One of the best little gifts I ever got was a bag full of various colored baker's twine on wooden spools. I have used that twine on nearly everything I have gifted in the past year and now I have some great spools left behind.

I decided to look around and see what sorts of repurposing ideas people had for these spools. One of the first things that caught my eye was using the surface of the spool as a canvas of sorts...

For those a little less artistically inclined- the spool as a simple photo holder or a vase.

Thursday, a newborn, and Etsy

This Thursday and Etsy post is all about the creature who seems to be popping up everywhere- the newborn. I feel as though I always know someone who is pregnant or who just welcomed a little one.

I don't think I could ever tire of looking for new baby gifts. All that sweetness and cozy...and although I am certainly no stranger to Target or Gymboree, there is something extra special about the handmade baby options on Etsy.

If I had my druthers, I would get all the newborns in my life a giant box filled with goodies like these....

The perfect blanket:

snail mail bear hugs

How great are these letterpress, die cut, grizzly bear hug cards by blackbird letterpress? They just won one of the Best New Product awards at the National Stationery Show.

I want to order up a whole slew of them to have on hand to mail out for all of those "Congratulations!", "Get well", "I miss you" occasions. They are the perfect way to say so many things. Who wouldn't want to open up an envelope and find this inside?

Paper Theater

"Tranquil Morning- Two Sisters"

"He found the rarest of thistles by his rock in the wood."

"When she held her child she could walk through the forest, eyes high above the tree-tops."

"Her parents had named her Spring, yet her heart belonged to autumn..."

"The Rose Thief"

"Dreams for Weary Sailors"

"Advice from a Robin..."

Artist Elly MacKay photographs her scenes of drawn, cut, layered paper to create these curious and theatrical images. It is a fascinating process that encompasses her wide array of artistic talents. Each print is an intricate, multifaceted piece of art.

my kind of princess

I understand the Disney Princess craze sweeping the nation is troubling to many parents (see the recent success of Peggy Orenstein's book Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture). If my daughter was not as enthusiastic about searching for slugs as she is about Belle from "Beauty and the Beast", I may be concerned about the princess effect too, but since I am not immediately distressed.....I really like these ribbon sculpture barrettes of the Disney Princesses.

What I like about them is that they are not so commercial or "girlie-girl". The designs are recognizable, but minimal and simple. They are little pieces of ribbon art really- and I'm charmed.

Thursday, Hiving Out, and Etsy

hexagon necklace by cristinapires

When we started this blog - oh about two years ago (seriously? wow) - coming up with a name for ourselves was a challenge. First, we, of course, way over thought it. We wanted something whimsical, but not too whimsical. Self-referential, but not explanatory. We also wanted a name with a pretty association. So since we wanted to think of our blog as a place where the three of us would be "hanging out" and sharing our discoveries and talking like busy bees in a beehive... we decided on, well, you get it...

The added benefit of going with "Hiving Out" was all the loveliness associated with bees, beehives, and honeycombs that we hoped would shape the look of this humble little blog. And so with that aesthetic in mind, here's a "Thursday" post with so many lovely Etsy pieces that celebrate the colors, shapes, and natural beauty found in all things bee - just in case we ever wanted to dress ourselves (or dress our homes) in the theme of our blog. :)

Buzz-worthy items that we we'd love to wear:
